Changed over….again…
I decided to move my site over to a blogging system called “”http://www.wordpress.org">WordPress". It is a pretty decent piece of software that I am still trying to get used to.
The biggest sellers for me were the ease of setup (at most 5 minutes) and the handy little bookmarklet I noticed it generated for me when I logged into my “test” setup which allows me to make a post any time by clicking a button on my bookmarks bar…regardless of the site I am visiting. So…if I find a site with something I like & want to share, I click a button, put a blurb, and , it will show up on my site within seconds of me clicking “Publish”.
The drawbacks of the system are few…but…I preferred the flexibility (through CSS) and extremely clean layout of another piece of software called “”http://www.textpattern.com/“>Textpattern”, but was not ready to dive into all the work of getting it to where I would be content with it. One example of a site that used TextPattern is JMRHoades.com. I love the photo-blog setup they have…very clean…easy to use…fun to look at (for me). However, “just throwing” that together wasn’t quite as easy as this was…and because I have only so much time and too much on my plate as it is…I went with WordPress.
I have a good feeling their will be an increased number of postings from here on out because of the bookmarklets button I have on my browser now…which is more important than a fancy looking site…IMO. If you are interested in playing with the software, sign up for an account and I will be happy to grant you “posting” priveleges. I’m willing to bet you will get hooked on this stuff…at least to some degree.
Also, don’t forget to check out the new sub-domain I set up: http://photos.whitespur.com (notice link on right…for future reference).
I expect interface changes to be coming to the site soon. Until the, please bear with the green-ness. Let me know what you think of the new setup…
If the Internet Sucks…
…it’s because you’re not using Firefox. Trust me…of all things you have ever heard from me…this is the mostest truestest of all…using Internet Explorer makes navigating & viewing the web suck compared to Firefox…
WordPress Comment Spammers
I have found one more small drawback to ….there are “Comment Spammers” galore. Within 24-hours of my switch-over, there were random comments being posted…mostly quotes from literature I don’t really read but have heard somewhere….
Anyway…not the point here…the point is, if you are having a similar problem, here is a link that should help you out.
The fix takes about 1 minute, if that—and apparently fixes the issue. You rename a file, and change one occurrence of the original filename to the newly created one in another. I haven’t seen any more ocmments at this point, but time will tell if it truely is a permanent fix.
FreeVMS 1.0
FreeVMS 1.0 , an open source implementation of once DEC, then Compaq, now HP’s OpenVMS operating system, has been released.
We use this operating system pretty heavily at the company I work for (Cerner). Although it feels extremely archaic in some ways, the stability and clustering technology can not be denied.
I think it would be interesting to see some advances in things like the editors and the toolkits available, which this project may be able to contribute to, either way, it’s something for OS-hobbiests to check out.
Cool….
I’m on my way home…had a three hour layover in Denver…and it doesn’t suck…
I have my laptop fired up, I’m watchin Blow, talkin’ to my wife and my buddy from Fargo North Dakota, surfin’ the web…
Considering the circumstances, it doesn’t get much better than this…
Thanksgiving Morning…
I woke up this morning with no power and about 4 inches of snow…
Snow looks nice on the trees…and the ground…from inside…but I don’t like dealing with it when I’m outside, as a good portion of society is retarded if driving conditions are not perfect…
If you are going to live where it snows, find a place where there are not many people…(where I grew up). Otherwise, live in Cali, Arizona, Florida, or another warm state…where idiots are just as plentiful, but you don’t have to worry having to deal with them on bad roads…
Happy Thanksgiving…
IBM Improving Desktop Workflow
Here’s
and interesting article (found on OSNews.com) about a product IBM is working on called “Workplace”. It appears to be a task-oriented workflow solution that attempts to capture as much information from sources ranging from PDF’s, IM, email, and user input (typing) and make it available for reuse…focusing on use in call centers, warehouses, etc.
Sounds interesting, but it is pretty early to tell where it will end up…either way, Microsoft is getting hit from a lot of angles these days….
Cringely on WiMax
Here’s an (another) interesting article from Robert Cringely on why WiFi hotspots replacing the existing telco industry won’t happen and why WiMax may do just that. The scariest part of the article is that he suggests Walmart as a perfect candidate for the big move. Of all things I hope we never see in this country, this situation comes in at a close-second place…right behind socialized medicine.
Tim O’Reilly Speech
Tim O’Reilly gave a presentation you can listen to here.
I think he has some very valid points on where the open source movement is & needs to be heading. I am a fan of open source philosophy…but do think there is, at this point in technology’s development, still a need for some proprietary software. I haven’t fully developed my stance on this statement…and it is late now…so I will not attempt to hammer it out now.
All in all…I agree with Tim that Amazon has some amazing technology behind their site and enjoyed the comparison to Barnes & Noble’s website, as it illustrates his position well.
